Silver-plated vs sterling silver: what is the difference?
“Is it real silver?” is one of the questions we hear most. Both sterling silver and silver plate are real silver at the surface, but they are made differently, cost differently and suit different uses.
What is sterling silver?
Sterling silver is a solid alloy of 92.5% pure silver, with the rest usually copper for strength. Pieces are often marked “925”. Because the whole object is silver, it is heavy, holds its value as a precious metal, and costs considerably more.
What is silver plate?
Silver-plated pieces are made from a base metal, shaped and finished, then coated with a layer of pure silver by electroplating. The surface you see and touch is silver: it has the same colour, shine and feel at the table.
Because the body is not solid silver, silver plate makes larger and more elaborate pieces, such as chafing dishes, trays, cake stands and coffee pots, possible at a fraction of the price of sterling.
How to tell them apart
- Markings: sterling is usually stamped “925” or “sterling”. Silver plate often carries a maker’s mark or terms such as “EPNS” or “silver plated”.
- Weight: a sterling piece is generally heavier than a plated piece of the same size.
- Price: a large sterling piece costs many times more than the same design in silver plate.
Which one should you choose?
- For hotels, restaurants, caterers and events: silver plate is the practical choice. It is used daily, it is affordable in the quantities needed, and worn pieces can be restored.
- For gifts, weddings and the home: silver plate gives the look of silver for serving and display, while sterling is usually chosen for smaller heirloom pieces.
Caring for both
Both tarnish naturally and both are cared for the same way: gentle hand washing, a good silver polish and storage in a soft bag. See our guide on how to care for silver-plated items.
